Torx pan head screws boast a characteristic star-shaped six-lobed design. Initially, they were mainly used for rather specific purposes, but now it’s impossible not to come across cars, motorcycles, bicycle brake systems, a hard disk drive, computer hardware, electronic devices, and many others which use Torx pan head screws. That internal pattern of such screws makes them look different from other fasteners but grants a useful advantage- they are not like ordinary fasteners.

What initially distinguished Torx pan head screws was the attention given to tamper resistance. Their unique design meant that the screws were in a shape that required specialised drivers, but only to which they could be driven, thus opening their full usability, yet making them more secure for sensitive applications. As it gained popularity, though, since this tamper-resistant feature was deemed to be at its disadvantage in many aspects, variants designed to keep it but adapted for wider usage came out. Variants are usually seen in applications where security is still number one, like in some industrial or consumer electronic products. Here is an infographic highlighting the versatile applications of Torx pan head screws across various industries.
